BO N NEVILLE POWE R A D M INIS TRATIO N Valley Creek 1 and 2 land acquisitions would conserve habitat for Montana fish and wildlife The Bonneville Power Administration intends to fund the purchase of two properties totaling 143 acres in Sanders County, Montana for conservation purposes. The properties include riparian, wetland and upland habitat located along Valley Creek. When the purchases are complete, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes will own and manage the properties for fish and wildlife conservation purposes. BPA will receive a conservation easement to ensure that the habitat values on the property are always protected. The funding will be provided as part of BPAs ongoing efforts to protect, restore and enhance habitat for westslope cutthroat trout. The acquisition would serve as partial mitigation for the construction and inundation of the Federal Columbia River Power System which includes dams on the main stem Columbia and Snake rivers. This land purchase would specifically satisfy some of BPAs mitigation for the construction and inundation of the Hungry Horse federal hydroelectric facility on the South Fork of the Flathead River The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes will provide long-term stewardship for the land and will develop a management plan to guide the protection and enhancement of habitat on the property. BPA and the Tribes will review the plan for consistency with the agreement and purposes of the acquisition. A letter describing the proposed purchase, a map and information describing environmental review requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act are available at www.bpa.gov/goto/LandAcquisitions For more information contact BPA project manager Cecilia Brown at 503-230-3460 or ckbrown@bpa.gov.
