Questions about prostate health? Dr. Martin has answers. Is an enlarged prostate cause for concern? As men age, many experience symptoms of an enlarged prostate also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). These symptoms include urgency and frequency of urination, increased night time urination, a difficult time starting their stream, post void dribbling, and a weak or interrupted urinary stream. If left untreated, BPH can lead to urinary tract infections, urinary retention, and irreversible bladder and kidney damage. Once your bladder stops working, it's hard to get it working again even after treating the blockage from the prostate. It's best to be proactive when it comes to your bladder health. Sarabeth Martin, MD What is UroLift? Urology Treatment with the Urolift® System is typically a one-time, in-office solution that provides rapid relief and recovery of BPH symptoms. It allows those patients on BPH medications to stop them and to forgo the risks of a more invasive surgery. It is also considered a first line treatment which allows patients to by- pass BPH medications and their side effects altogether. The goal of the UroLift System treatment is to relieve symptoms so you can get back to your life and resume your daily activities. The UroLift System is the only minimally invasive BPH procedure offered at our institution that does not cause any new or lasting erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction. Who is a good candidate for this procedure? The UroLift® System treatment is good for those that still have some bladder contraction present and a prostate size of 100 grams or less. For prostates that are larger than this or that have significant tissue growth invading into the bladder, then there are other options available besides the UroLift® System. Some may choose transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), laser vaporization of the prostate, or robotic assisted laparoscopic simple prostate removal. Urolift's advantage is that it does not require an operating room or anesthesia. It can be safely performed in the office.
