Grind up a small handful of ice with a little bit of rock salt to help sharpen the blades. Run cold water before during and after grinding waste as it will help flush debris down the drain. In other words, don't drop a whole pan of leftover spaghetti down the disposal and hope for the best, believe me I've seen it all and it's not pretty.
