Differences Between Tex-Mex and Interior Mexican Food

Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican food are often spoken of in the same breath, as if they were really the same type of food. In fact, there are numerous differences between the two. Tex-Mex is a fusion cuisine that combines elements of both American and Mexican food. While it originated in the American Southwest, it can be found all across the country. These are some of the most notable differences between the two types of cuisine:

Chances are, you’ve found yourself snacking on nachos under the impression that they had something to do with Mexican food. While nachos were invented in northern Mexico in the early20thcentury, the type of nachos that are familiar to most Americans—tortilla chips, cheese sauce, and toppings such as jalapenos and beef—were actually invented in Texas during the 1970s.

If you’ve ever enjoyed this tasty blend of onions, peppers, and grilled meat on a tortilla, you’ve probably assumed you were eating Mexican food. The truth is that the fajita is a Texas dish, although it’s become popular in Mexico under the name arrachera. When you eat a fajita, you probably add sour cream, shredded cheese, iceberg lettuce, and other foods that are more characteristic of Tex-Mex than traditional Mexican cuisine.

Enchiladas are a classic Mexican dish that dates back to the time of the Maya. Tex-Mex enchiladas are very different than their Mexican equivalent, however. They tend to use grated yellow cheese, ground beef, chili sauce, and other ingredients that you won’t find in traditional enchiladas.
