Best Gear for Snow Hiking

Skiing and snowboarding are not the only winter weather sports worth checking out. Snow hiking is another great way to get outdoors and commune with nature, and it offers the added bonus of time away from the madding crowds. While there are risks inherent to snow hiking, with the proper gear you can all but guarantee a perfect day outdoors.

The most important thing to keep in mind is the balance between keeping warm and overheating. Layers are essential for staying warm, even when there are variations in temperature and weather conditions. A wicking base layer is the first, and most essential, item for layering success. Wool, not cotton, socks are also key. Choose a reputable brand like Smartwool and pair them with water-resistant hiking boots. A sturdy pair of water-resistant boots is essential gear for an enjoyable day spent hiking in the snow.

Gloves or mittens are also a great idea, especially if you like to use your arms while hiking. Again, wicking and water resistance are the two main features to look for, and many hikers opt for lightweight running gloves for protection and comfort. A shell layer will be welcome if you encounter any precipitation and can be easily paired with running tights for added warmth.

Snow hiking is a relaxing and restorative way to spend a winter day, and with the proper gear, the weather won't hold you back. Be prepared to work up a sweat, and pack-in some additional layers and you will be good to go. Don't forget your water, trail map, and be sure to let someone know where you are headed, and what time you should return. Stick to established poles, and if you are in an area that has a lot of snow accumulation, poles and snowshoes may not be a bad idea.
