Hit the Slopes: Skiing vs Snowboarding
Spend time in any ski town and you will soon realize that there is a definite team mentality between skiers and snowboarders. With some mountains more divided than others, choosing whether to ski or board this season can make a difference in your overall experience.
While many skiers may want to give riding a try and see how the other half lives, there are several factors to consider prior to making your decision. Many people think that the skills between the two modes are easily transferable, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
If you are just starting out, there are some helpful hints that will aid in helping you to determine whether you want to try skiing or snowboarding for your first season. The old adage, “Skiing is easier to learn but harder to master, snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master” holds true and is important to remember when you are a beginner.
If you only have a few days, skiing will be easier to pick-up and you will be able to make some good progress, even if your ski holiday is a week or less in duration. The body positioning is much more intuitive with skiing, as the legs are kept separate whereas the boarder is in a side position with limited to no peripheral vision.
Once a boarder has mastered their edges and how to turn, it is off to the races. Expect to fall down quite a lot and experience some frustration, but once the movements click, you are good to go. With skiing, you will also need to master your turns and keep your skis from crossing. Both activities are a lot of fun and you really can't wrong with any day spent up on the mountain!
